Set Kit
How much space do I need to set up a wine and/or beer kit in my home?

I’ve been interested in trying this for a while, and I don’t know the first thing. Figured I’d start with whether I can even set one up in the basement.

Unheated basements are great places for wine and beer, if you have a sink and stove down there.. The space you need depends on the supplies and doodads you keep around. A kit for one or the other only takes up about 3 cubic feet. Add a second bucket if you want to do both wine and beer. Eventually, you will add a glass carboy. You also need room for bottle storage, both full and empty ones. Figure two cases of pints per batch of beer. Some people add a dedicated refrigerator. You can use a large stock-pot from your kitchen until you take the plunge and get a huge one just for the beer. Add another couple of cubic feet for supplies you buy in bulk. Also reserve a couple of inches of bookshelf space for Papazian’s book, The New Complete Guide to Home Brewing and for the notebook you keep your records in. Come to think of it, turn your whole house into a brewery/winery.
